This module aims to equip participants with an understanding of bereavement and grief, what the bible says about it, and how the church can respond appropriately to people in a time of loss. It covers what is involved in preparing for and taking a funeral and ensuring God is at the heart of this essential ministry.

 

Intended Aims and Learning Outcomes

  • State the role of the church in contemporary society with regards to funerals and appreciate the unique distinctions of a church funeral.
  • Gain a biblical and scientific understanding of bereavement and loss, and ways in which the church can care pastorally for the bereaved.
  • Be able to conduct a funeral service including articulating the hope and comfort knowing Jesus offers for the bereaved.
  • Be aware of the impact on the minister of death and bereavement and know strategies for selfcare and reflection.
