The Most Revd Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York
Stephen Cottrell is the Archbishop of York. He took up office via zoom conference on 9 July 2020. This was a first for the Church of England! Before this he was Bishop of Chelmsford, the second largest and the most diverse diocese in the Church of England. He has also served as Bishop of Reading in the Oxford diocese; in parishes in London and Chichester; as Missioner and Evangelist in West Yorkshire and nationally as part of the Archbishop of Canterbury and York’s mission team; and as Canon Pastor of Peterborough Cathedral. He is a member of the House of Lords and until recently served on their Select Committee for Communication.
Before ordination Stephen worked in the film industry. He is a well-known writer and speaker on evangelism, spirituality and catechesis. He is one of the authors of the popular and widely used Emmaus and Pilgrim courses. Among his recent books are Do Nothing to Change your Life; Discovering What Happens When You Stop; Hit the Ground Kneeling; seeing leadership differently; Christ in the Wilderness, reflecting on the paintings by Stanley Spencer and Striking out, poems and stories from the Camino and a children’s book, The Sleepy Shepherd. Amongst his interests are cooking, eating, music, poetry and supporting Spurs. He is married to Rebecca and they have three boys.
